Reaction to Benadryl and other similar medications (Anticholinergic toxidrome) (diphenhydramine overdose): An unresponsive 26-year-old woman had been found in a hotel room. She was febrile (hot as a hare); unresponsive (mad as a hatter); her pupils were dilated/enlarged (blind as a bat); her skin was diffusely erythematous (red as a beet), and dry (dry as a bone). These signs are consistent with an anticholinergic toxidrome (a syndrome of the findings described above that one finds with this kind of poisoning). The police had found an empty box of over-the- counter diphenhydramine (Benadryl). (L.S.)
