Blood
clot over the septum of the nose (Nasal Septal hematoma): A
22-year-old man complained of nose pain after having struck his
face against the dashboard during a motor vehicle accident. A
reddish-purple swelling of the nasal septum is seen through the
right nostril/naris. Uneveness was noted upon feeling over the
nasal bone. The swelling was consistent with a right septal hematoma.
If this hematoma is not drained, the cartilage that makes up the
nasal septum may die from compromised blood supply, resulting
in a permanent cosmetic deformity of the nose for the patient.(L.S.)
