The
so-called "skin eating" infection (Necrotizing fasciitis):
A 76-year-old woman presented with fever and left leg swelling
and redness. During a 4-hour evaluation, the redness was noted
to extend to involve the entire thigh; blood filled blisters developed..
The patient also developed life-threatening low blood pressure.
The aggressive nature of the symcptoms and rash are suggestive
of necrotizing fasciitis in which the causative organisms are
most commonly several species of bacteria, however b-hemolytic
Strecptococcus ( a type of Strep infection), Staphylococcus
aureus, anaerobes (a type of Staph infection), or Gram-negative
rods (another class of bacteria) may alone cause this syndrome.
