Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron
dermatitis): A patient presented with a
red, itchy, small-blistered rash of the arms and lower
back 6 hours following clearing brush and debris from his
backyard. The linear pattern of several areas of the lesions together
with the itch is suggestive of poison ivy irritation (Toxicodendron
dermatitis). The lesions of his lower back resulted from having
tucked in his shirt with his contaminated hands. The clinician
must differentiate between the initial inflammation of the rash
and infection by staph and strep bacterial species that may result
from scratching the rash. (L.S.)
