Blood
over the white of the eye (Subconjunctival hemorrhage): A
65-year-old woman presented to the emergency department because
a friend was concerned that the patient was having a stroke. The
patient felt fine other than complaining of a cough. Sometimes
even minimal trauma, for example coughing, can cause rupture of
the very small blood vessels that one sees over the white of the
eye. The blood actually sits underneath a clear lining over the
white of the eye called the conjunctiva (L.S.)
